Years ago, this painting started as a sketch on a small yellow Post-It at work. At the time I was suffering from chronic insomnia and I wanted to express in color what it felt like not to be able to sleep.
If I have to pick a single favorite color, it would be blue. Because I love blue, I often avoid using it in paintings (to force myself to stretch a little and learn the nuances of other hues). Here I have pitted the blue against orange and dark against light to represent the anguish of insomnia.
