I began Happy Thoughts in 2005 after a few years of not painting. The idea for it came from a painting experiment I did in 2002 where I abstracted a text phrase in leftover paint from other paintings I was working on at the time. I wanted Happy Thoughts to be about vivid color and mark making, free of representation, but related to writing. I wrote two different phrases on the background (neither of which is "happy thoughts") and started abstracting the letters. I painted by feel. I added marks as the surface "told" me it needed something. I painted only in my spare time and it took 2 years to finish.
My favorite color at the time was deep orange, so I featured it in this painting. Otherwise, I used saturated, "happy" colors.
